These different attacks: what Western media wrote about the explosions in Russia and Europe

On the night of November 13 a series of terrorist attacks were committed in Paris, killing at least 129 people. Politicians and statesmen unanimously condemned the jihadist attacks in the heart of France. The pages of Western publications published calls to immediately punish international terrorists wherever they were in the name of the values of the free world. Such unanimity has not always been inherent to the European and American media, which rather ambiguously covered similar tragedies in Russia. Ruposters collected what the Western media wrote in the aftermath of terrorist attacks that have rocked Europe and Russia.

Beslan (2004)

The Christian Science Monitor: "Even more dangerous than to imagine a democracy where there is none, is to support another Putin's illusion  - about the fault of international terrorism. In his speech after the tragedy in Beslan Putin didn't mention Chechnya a single time, although it was obvious that the trail from Beslan leads to this war-torn Republic".>>>

Newsweek: "The discipline imposed by Putin is based on fear, which leads to inertia - to paralysis of the government. The latest wave of terror brutally demonstrated this weakness and has made Putin himself more vulnerable to criticism than ever before." >>>

Le Figaro: "In a normal country the appeal of Vladimir Putin to the nation after the tragedy in Beslan would have been perceived as a confession of impotence on the part of the person who is unable to fend off the threat of terrorism spawned by the Chechen conflict." >>>

The Weekly Standard: "The sad truth is that today, 15 years after the collapse of the USSR, the attitude towards the people of Russia has not changed. A person is seen as means to an end, but not an independent persona. Therefore, the lives of Beslan children were written off from the moment the school was captured. And this fact should be remembered before Russia is given carte blanche in its 'near abroad' or, again, glancing into Putin's eyes, to discern in them something that seems to resemble the likeness of the soul". >>>

The Independent: "The bitter truth is that if Russia does not cease to torment Chechnya, the terrorist attacks will surely continue. It will bring more pain for the people of Chechnya and Russia". >>>

Trains in Madrid (2004)

Terror Attacks Coverage Reveals Western Media's Disgraceful Double Standards E229941b3ffe94c646d31212f7162476

The Guardian: "Blair is right about the fact that we are all in danger from Islamic terrorists who provoked the war in Iraq and will not leave us alone even if we get out of there. Moreover, supporters of Al Qaeda are inspired by the alleged withdrawal of Spanish troops from Iraq and credit it to the successful attack in Madrid". >>>

Christian Science Monitor: "Jihad in Europe can be a catalyst for the revision of relations between Christians and Muslims for the specific purpose of ensuring public safety. Or, preferably, it can move the continent even further down the path of redefining its identity". >>>

The Observer: "It's not easy to convince people: to explain to them that terrorism and unstable states with weapons of mass destruction are two sides of the same coin, to tell people what they don't want to hear - that in a world, where we, the Westerners, enjoy all the benefits of modern life, from the simplest to the most important, we are at serious risk. We need to fight and win this struggle - and this struggle is going on today in Iraq." >>>

Los Angeles Times: "The latest Bin Laden message to Europe says: do not spill European blood for the gang, sitting in the White house. The message has omitted that the blood in Europe was shed by the terrorists. Talented in the art of communication, Bin Laden this time picked the right words to sell his product - active opposition to America and the West - to the widest possible audience." >>>

The Moscow metro (2010)

Terror Attacks Coverage Reveals Western Media's Disgraceful Double Standards 8a9ecc40cf31577f38fdd47d19a6e503

Die Zeit: "Abroad, the Kremlin represents the military campaign under the fashion brand name of "the fight against international terrorism" and, thus, conceals that the conflict is caused by the desire of Chechens for independence". >>>

The Guardian: "The attacks were revenge for the deaths of the leaders of the militants. The incident underscores the vital need for the Kremlin to seriously begin to deal with systematic human rights violations in the North Caucasus, as well as with poverty and corruption". >>>

"Western society is also faced with terrorist attacks, but Russia and the West don't have the same enemy". >>>

The Globe And Mail: "The explosion in Moscow was a  predictable response to North Caucasus policy, which combines the habit of relying on corrupt and incompetent local authorities with the actions of security services, almost entirely focused on revenge, reprisals and extrajudicial killings - targeted assassinations, harassment of the families of terrorists, torture". >>>

The Financial Times: "Prime Minister Putin must understand that problems of the North Caucasus can not be solved only by punitive measures." >>>

The Economist: "It is a shame that there is no real alternative to Putin, for his policy toward the rebellious Republic is as disastrous as the policy of his predecessor. Until this state of affairs radically changes, the current situation in Chechnya will remain: corruption, volatile mixture of competing armed gangs fighting for lucrative tidbits of this region. Meanwhile, Russians in Moscow and other cities should get used to the constant threat of terrorism on the threshold of their doors". >>>

Buses in London (2005)

Terror Attacks Coverage Reveals Western Media's Disgraceful Double Standards 90f78453f00b8ae6e3b83def89c59172

The Financial Times: "The only answer to terrorists is resistance. The enemies of freedom always underestimate their adversaries. Let us prove that they once again made that mistake. Values, inspiring Londoners are the only foundation on which we can build a common home for all humanity". >>>

Le Figaro: "The killing of innocent people in London and Madrid have other consequences. They make the Europeans more determined and strengthen their solidarity in the face of barbarism." >>>

Los Angeles Times: "The work on modernization, liberalization and subsequent democratization of the Greater Middle East is the only reliable way to drain the swamp in which the terrorist mosquitoes thrive in the long run. And here Europe and not the United States, must wake up and begin to work more actively and wake up quickly.". >>>

El Pais: "London bombings should remind everyone that our society has a mortal enemy, fanatical, yet sophisticated and ruthless, who believes our troubles and fear is his biggest success. This enemy has no clear outlines; it is difficult to identify and localize, but we already know - especially due to police raids in Spain that this enemy is among us, within our free and democratic society". >>>

Domodedovo Airport (2011)

Terror Attacks Coverage Reveals Western Media's Disgraceful Double Standards Accc378009826d41e111b6253272a225

El Periodico: "The issue of Caucasus, which sits between Europe and Asia, has its roots in the nineteenth century. Violence can only generate violence." >>>

The Financial Times: "Western intelligence services and police have prevented attacks by identifying and arresting the terrorists in advance, as well as controlling access to explosives and technology of bomb production. In Russia it is much more difficult to apply these methods, especially considering the fact that police cannot go into some areas of the North Caucasus". >>>

"Organizations that are fighting the Russian authorities in the North Caucasus, are definitely Islamist, but we should not assume that the problem of terrorism in Russia is similar to the problem of Al Qaeda. >>>

The Times: "In Chechnya, Dagestan, Ingushetia and all other places between the Black and Caspian seas the extremist religious ideology exists only in a form which parasites on the already existing nationalist ideology. Moreover, although methods used by separatist organizations are repulsive, their claim to their own state is fair". >>>

The Washington Post: "Intelligence agencies of this country [Russia], unlike their colleagues in Europe and North America, have been unable to devise ways and means to identify terrorist groups, prevent attacks and protect places of mass gatherings, such as airports and metro". >>>

Time: "In recent years, Islamic terrorism could not apply a strong blow anywhere outside the Afghan-Pakistan region and Iraq. Nowhere, except Russia. In fact, we can say that the Russian government by its actions over the past two decades has made a much greater contribution to the creation of the largest and most active new center of Islamic terrorism in the modern world than Osama bin Laden". >>>

"Charlie Hebdo" (2015)

Terror Attacks Coverage Reveals Western Media's Disgraceful Double Standards Bd608ebfa88c6e2dcdd2d2c2d12fe3d0

El Pais:"The shooting of almost the entire editorial staff of Charlie Hebdo magazine means something more terrible: it is the attempt to force the Western culture, the cradle of freedom, democracy and human rights, to abandon those values, to introduce censorship, restrict freedom of speech, to identify topics forbidden for discussion, that is, to abandon one of the fundamental principles of a free society: the right to criticize". >>>

The Wall Street Journal: "Wednesday's attack also demonstrates again that violent Islam isn't a reaction to poverty or Western policies in the Middle East. It is an ideological challenge to Western civilization and principles, including freedom of the press and religious pluralism." >>>

The Financial Times: "Yesterday a monstrous bloody attempt to wipe the smile off our faces was attempted. And while these bigots have killed the satirists, they will never annihilate satire. On the contrary. From today onwards, Charlie Hebdo will become the unifying force that will inspire everyone who appreciates life and laughter above death and sanctimonious gloom". >>>

The Independent: "It is always worth repeating - responsibility for any violence against Charlie Hebdo rests solely on the shoulders of those who committed the violence. Whether you agree with what they published or not - they do not deserve it". >>>

Volgograd (2013)

Terror Attacks Coverage Reveals Western Media's Disgraceful Double Standards Ebb2b5e4e61cf644f0cbd358bea63f89

The Independent: "Russia is paying off its old debts for the colonial wars of the nineteenth century, which had burdened it with lands that it cannot control, but can not abandon. Unfortunately, it seems that violence will continue, albeit not in Sochi." >>>

Berliner Zeitung: "As cynical as it may sound, but the terrorist attack in Volgograd benefits Putin". >>>

"Putin was already planning to transform Sochi into a high-security zone with wiretapping of phones and Internet communications. And the attack gave him the opportunity to do anything he wants at the Games. And Western governments, especially given the side effects of the ongoing U.S. war on terror, like the NSA and Guantanamo Bay, will not be able to accuse him of exceeding his authority". >>>

The Guardian: "A high price has been paid for Putin's and Yeltsin's mistakes in this region [the North Caucasus]. Will it be even higher in Sochi?". >>>

Paris (2015)

Terror Attacks Coverage Reveals Western Media's Disgraceful Double Standards 3a01223c25c828d99450d122ee9d6d44

The Wall Street Journal: "The freedom of assembly has come under attack on Friday. This once again reminds us that at stake is not the Middle East policy of France, but French freedom. In this situation, we all need to regain our former resolve. Barbarians, standing at the gate, must be destroyed". >>>

Foreign Policy: "The difference between Paris and Moscow is the difference between taking the "Bataclan" in a couple hours and folding the stack with the still-living victims of a terrorist attack. This is the difference between a sober recognition of security errors and Putin's pathetic apology to the relatives of those killed at Dubrovka, followed by attempts to shut up anyone who doubted the expediency of using gas". >>>

The Financial Times: "We have underestimated this war. Islamic state must be destroyed — before it can commit atrocities greater than the terrorist attacks in Paris". >>>

Rzeczpospolita: "Friends, we are with you. We understand that barbarians settled in your house. We will make every effort to chase them away, but ask that you finally begin to effectively defend yourself. The price here is security of your democracy and of our Europe. To protect our European Paradise, which was attacked, we need action". >>>

The Washington Post: "No anti-Islamic actions justify the terrible crimes committed by representatives of the Islamic state, and they did not provoke these crimes. Europe could become the most hospitable place you can dream of, but the Islamic state will still send its fighters there and recruit new members among the disenchanted local youth". >>>
